What sort of bullshit have you been told? The clue is in the name. 'Martial' as in 'war' - Martial Arts are primarily about being able defend yourself. Self development and 'helping others' are secondary elements.
Humans have been watching men fight each other, sometimes to the death - for entertainment, for thousands of years. Its nothing new.

Good for Bruce Lee, and yes, 'self development' sells well in the west. However, like I said, Martial Arts - the clue is in the damn name. The PRIMARY aim of ANY martial art should be how to defend yourself against violent attack. If its not, then you're wasting your money. Self-development and everything that comes with that should be SECONDARY elements that arrive after you have an understanding of the PRIMARY aim.

Actually true martial arts are about training your body mind and soul first .. fighting is actually the last thing a true martial artist wants. MMA is not a martial art it combines strictly the fighting aspect of martial arts and nothing else

Then why is Serra not on anyone's top 10 lists anymore? He proved that he had a lucky punch on GSP in the first match as GSP beat Serra in the 2nd fight without any damage taken. Matt Serra's next fight will be vs Matt Hughes and he'll lose that and go down to lightweight and get manhandled by people like Florian and Sherk (don't even ask about BJ Penn, he's too good).

Are you a dumbass, there is such thing as LUCK, thus there is such thing as a lucky punch. There is a reason why the word "luck" is used. And Matt serra was lucky 2 land a pin-point punch on GSP's tempo. yes i said he was lucky, cause he didnt do that twice.
